About Us
Ka Pā Hula Nā Manu Hoʻoheno Aloha, The Hula School of the Beloved Ones Cherished in Aloha, was founded on the belief that meaningful learning begins with meaningful relationships.
We believe hula is far more than movement. It is a living tradition that carries history, language, music, values, expression, and ways of seeing the world. Every lesson is an invitation to deepen our understanding; not only of hula, but of ourselves, one another, and the Hawaiian culture from which this treasured art comes.
Our approach is rooted in a simple conviction: before reaching for complexity, we seek understanding. Before seeking performance, we seek purpose. Before mastering choreography, we cultivate character. When our learning is rooted in ʻike, aloha, humility, and meaningful relationships, a lasting sense of pilina naturally follows.
Why "Nā Manu"?
The name Ka Pā Hula Nā Manu Hoʻoheno Aloha reflects the heart of our school.
Birds (nā manu) have long held special meaning in Hawaiʻi. They appear throughout mele, moʻolelo, ʻōlelo noʻeau, and the natural world as messengers, guides, navigators, caretakers, and symbols of connection across generations. They remind us that we do not journey alone.
Our haumāna are affectionately known as Nā Manu Hoʻoheno Aloha, the Beloved Ones Cherished in Aloha.
Like birds, each student follows a unique path while remaining connected to the greater flock. Together we honor those who came before us, support those who learn beside us, and prepare the way for those who will follow.
The founder's appreciation for birds, conservation, and the natural world also shapes our pā's identity. We strive to be ecologically conscious, believing that caring for the environment is another way to practice aloha and fulfill our kuleana as stewards of creation.
Rooted in Lineage
One of the beautiful truths of Hawaiian learning is that wisdom is rarely received from only one source. An ʻōlelo noʻeau reminds us:
ʻAʻole pau ka ʻike i ka hālau hoʻokahi.
All knowledge is not taught in the same school.
This wisdom reminds us to approach learning with humility. Every kumu has teachers. Every teacher is shaped by many experiences, relationships, and opportunities to grow. While there is a primary lineage through which knowledge is entrusted, there are also countless influences that continue to deepen understanding throughout a lifetime.
The teachings and approach of Ka Pā Hula Nā Manu Hoʻoheno Aloha are grounded in the hula teachings of Loea Hula D. Kuʻualohanui Kauliʻa and Kumu Hula ʻOāokaʻena Kirkland, under whose guidance our founder, Kumu I. Nohea Magboo, completed her ʻūniki. Our pā is also informed by other kumu/teachers, traditions, experiences, and sources of learning encountered along the way, including education, music and the arts, Hawaiian cultural practices, martial arts, and the natural world. Together, these influences contribute to the perspective and approach through which we learn, move, and teach.
We honor every teacher who has shared knowledge with integrity and aloha. In doing so, we recognize that we are part of a living continuum, receiving with gratitude, caring for what has been entrusted to us, and faithfully passing it forward to future generations.
Our Learning Community
Hula Manu welcomes adults of all experience levels who desire a thoughtful, supportive, and culturally grounded learning environment.
Whether stepping into hula for the first time or returning after many years, every haumāna begins with the same foundation. We value curiosity over perfection, consistency over speed, and relationships over competition.
Beyond our weekly classes, we hope to foster opportunities for workshops, huakaʻi, community partnerships, collaborations with hālau near and far, conservation efforts, cultural enrichment, and lifelong learning. As our pā grows, we look forward to exploring Hawaiian cultural practices beyond hula, including hana noʻeau such as lei making and hulu work, as well as connecting haumāna with Hawaiʻi's natural and cultural landscapes through meaningful experiences.
Our goal is not simply to teach dances.
It is to help cultivate knowledgeable, respectful, and compassionate individuals who carry the spirit of aloha into their homes, workplaces, and communities.
