Learning at Ka Pā Hula Nā Manu Hoʻoheno Aloha extends beyond the walls of our pā. While weekly classes provide our foundation, we believe that hula is best understood through meaningful relationships…with people, places, culture, and the natural world. As our pā grows, so too will the opportunities to learn, serve, and connect.

Learning Beyond the Pā
Hula is more than what happens during class. It invites us to become lifelong learners who remain curious, observant, and open to new experiences.
As Ka Pā Hula Nā Manu Hoʻoheno Aloha continues to grow, we hope to offer opportunities that enrich classroom learning and deepen our understanding of Hawaiian culture through firsthand experiences.
Participation in these opportunities is generally optional unless otherwise communicated.
Examples may include:
Huakaʻi (educational excursions)
Nature walks and hikes
Birding outings inspired by our identity as Nā Manu
Visits to botanical gardens, museums, cultural sites, and historical landmarks
Community performances and hōʻike
Educational field trips
Cultural festivals and community celebrations
Each experience is intended to extend learning beyond the classroom while strengthening our relationships with one another and with the world around us.
Workshops & Cultural Enrichment
Hula exists within a much broader cultural landscape. Throughout the year, Hula Manu may offer workshops that deepen our appreciation for Hawaiian knowledge, artistry, and ways of living.
Workshop topics may include:
Lei making and haku lei
Feather work (hulu)
Hawaiian language (ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi)
Mele and oli
Hawaiian history and culture
Native Hawaiian plants and traditional uses
Hawaiian implements and material culture
Music and hoʻokani
Guest cultural practitioners and educators
Other traditional and contemporary Hawaiian arts
These opportunities allow haumāna to continue learning while honoring the many interconnected aspects of Hawaiian culture.
Community Partnerships & Service
We believe that learning carries with it a responsibility to serve.
As opportunities arise, Ka Pā Hula Nā Manu Hoʻoheno Aloha hopes to cultivate partnerships with organizations whose missions align with our own. These relationships provide opportunities for haumāna to contribute meaningfully while learning from others.
Potential partnerships may include:
conservation and environmental organizations
native habitat restoration projects
botanical gardens and arboretums
museums and cultural institutions
schools and educational organizations
birding and natural history organizations
community nonprofits
volunteer service projects
By caring for our communities and the natural world, we practice aloha through action and strengthen our understanding of mālama ʻāina.
Building Relationships Across the Hula Community
Hula has always been sustained through relationships.
Ka Pā Hula Nā Manu Hoʻoheno Aloha values friendship, mutual respect, and collaboration within the broader hula community. We recognize that each hālau and pā hula contributes uniquely to the preservation and perpetuation of Hawaiian culture.
As opportunities arise, we hope to build meaningful relationships with hālau hula, pā hula, cultural practitioners, and educators both locally and beyond. These partnerships may include:
attending workshops hosted by other kumu hula
participating in educational exchanges
supporting hōʻike and cultural events
welcoming guest instructors and practitioners
collaborating on community service initiatives
celebrating the accomplishments of fellow hālau
We believe that learning alongside one another strengthens the entire hula community and honors the shared kuleana of preserving this treasured tradition.
Hawaiʻi and Beyond
Although our roots remain grounded in the teachings entrusted to our pā, we hope that, in time, our learning will take us beyond our local community.
Future educational travel opportunities may include visits to Hawaiʻi and other meaningful destinations where haumāna can deepen their understanding of Hawaiian culture, history, ecology, and place.
These journeys are intended to be educational and relational rather than recreational, offering opportunities to learn directly from the land, from cultural practitioners, and from the communities who continue to steward these traditions.
Participation in travel opportunities will always be voluntary and subject to separate registration, costs, and participation agreements.
Looking Ahead Together
Every haumāna arrives with a different story, a different pace, and a different reason for beginning.
Some will remain for a season.
Others may continue for many years.
Whatever your journey may be, our hope is that your time within Ka Pā Hula Nā Manu Hoʻoheno Aloha nurtures a lifelong love of learning, meaningful relationships, and a deep respect for the Hawaiian culture from which hula comes.
May the friendships you build, the knowledge you gain, and the experiences you share continue to shape your life long after class has ended.
